The Stark Museum of Art is pleased to announce a special event, Lunch & Look: Buffalo Soldiers in Art, presented by Sarah Boehme, museum curator. This engaging event will take place on Friday, July 26, from 12-1 p.m. at the Stark Museum of Art.
The Lunch & Look event will provide an exploration of the powerful stories of African Americans who served their country as Buffalo Soldiers in the United States Army, as well as examine the origin of the Buffalo Soldier name and what it signifies. These brave members of the military played a crucial role in American history, and their legacy is beautifully captured through various art quilts in the current exhibition “Black Pioneers: Legacy in the American West.”
“We are excited to offer this unique opportunity to learn about the significant impact of the Buffalo Soldiers through the lens of art,” said Boehme. “Art has the power to tell stories in a profound way, and we hope this event will bring to light the extraordinary experiences and sacrifices of these soldiers, while also highlighting the artists and quilts in ‘Black Pioneers: Legacy in the American West.'”
Boehme, known for her insightful and compelling presentations, will guide attendees through an array of artistic representations that highlight the courage, resilience and contributions of the Buffalo Soldiers. In addition to the art quilts, the talk will include depictions of Buffalo Soldiers by Euro-American artists Frederic Remington and William Herbert Dunton..The Lunch & Look promises to deepen the understanding and appreciation of these often-overlooked heroes in American history.
Lunch & Look attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch and enjoy an hour of art and history in the Walter G. Reidel III Education Center at the museum. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session, allowing participants to engage directly with Boehme and deepen their understanding of the subject matter.
“We at the Stark Museum of Art are pleased to bring back Lunch & Look programs in person. We want people to come and enjoy this opportunity in community. I will give a slide talk exploring the stories of Buffalo Soldiers as represented in quilts in the ‘Black Pioneers’ exhibition. With the slides, I can also compare how other artists in history have represented or omitted Buffalo Soldiers. We hope this will be the spark for attendees to ask questions and to consider how art both illuminates and obscures our histories,” said Boehme.
The Stark Museum of Art is committed to enhancing cultural knowledge and appreciation through its extensive collection and special programs. This Lunch & Look event is a part of the museum’s ongoing efforts to provide enriching educational experiences to the community.
