Saturday, June 4 is Free Fishing Day in Texas.
Toledo Bend
GOOD. Water stained; 78-80 degrees; 0.90 feet low. The water level is 171.0 with two generators running 6 hours a day from 1 p.m.-7 p.m. The back feeder creeks and the main lake are clear with no rain this week. Bass are in their summer transition going to river bends and points. Early in the mornings as the sun comes up use topwater baits (Pop Rs, buzz baits, and spooks) switching to 8-12 inch ribbon tail worms and crankbaits midmorning as the fish transition deeper to 12-20 feet of water. Crappie are in full transition back to their summer pattern to the brush piles, so it is back to the crappie jigs and live minnows. The bigger Bluegills have moved out of the shallows to 6-10 feet of water biting live crickets, grasshoppers, and earthworms. Catfish are biting on a slip cork rig and bottom rigs in 2-10 feet of water from first light to mid-morning using shrimp, live shad or frozen, chicken livers and punch baits. Noodle fishing for catfish has been great at night as the surface temperature has cooled. Summer has rolled in hot with air temperatures in the 90s so don’t forget to wear your sun protection and light clothing, and sunglasses. It is important, when on the water, to stay hydrated to avoid exhaustion or heat stroke. It is time to bring the family out on kayaks or canoes to go fishing or exploring on beautiful Toledo Bend Lake! Remember to always keep your life jacket on while on the water and don’t forget to fasten that engine kill switch lanyard to your life jacket if you are operating a motorized vessel on the water. Play it safe on the water, always inform your loved ones or a friend of your expected return time to port or home. Good luck and tight lines! Report from Captain Steve (Scooby) Stubbe, Mudfish Adventures LLC, Mudfish Rod Shop, Kayak and Fishing Guide Service.
