Texas driver’s license offices will be opening in phases and taking customers only by reservations. Orange is in the Phase 3 section and the office on Highway 87 South will open on June 3 with reservations beginning at 1 p.m. Friday, May 29.
The Texas Department of Public Safety recently announced the changes being adapted because of the covid 19 pandemic. Most drivers will still be able to renew licenses online.
The extension for licenses that expired during the stay-at-home orders is still in effect. DPS will give a 60-day notice before the extension is rescinded.
Under the new rules at the driver’s license bureau, only one customer will be allowed inside at a time, with an exception for parents with young children, the disabled or the elderly.
When taking a driving test, the DPS staff member will wear a mask and the customer must wear a mask or face covering.
The bureau staff will sanitize workstations and equipment after each customer. The eye exam part of the renewal will not require physical contact with a machine.
Also, no cash will be accepted. Fees must be paid with a card, check, or money order.
