Concrete orange sculptures being ordered by businesses must be painted within 60 days of being placed.
The rule is one the Orange City Council passed on second and final reading Tuesday. The council added a section on ornamental signs to the city ordinances.
The new ordinance is specifically for the sculptures the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce. The rules will apply only to places within the city limits.
The city does not allow off-premises business advertising except for billboards; so a concrete orange with a business name must be displayed at a business.
An ornamental sign without a business name can be placed on any piece of land and within any zone designation with permission of the property owner. The concrete orange, though, must meet the other guidelines like not being in the public right-of-way or blocking traffic. The oranges in residential areas must meet the property’s deed restrictions.
The sculptures cannot create a traffic hazzard, block a public sidewalk or placed on public property (except with permission).
Property owners must keep the orange sculptures neatly maintained.
The chamber’s orange sculptures are $250 for members and $500 for non-members and will include a year’s chamber membership.
The oranges are about 30 inches tall and 30 inches wide and weigh about 650 pounds.
