Sales tax payments to local entities continue to rise as people buy items as part of the recovery after Tropical Storm Harvey. The Texas Comptroller's Office has sent the checks covering the sales from February. The payments are: Bridge City (1.5 percent sales tax): $127,958 for the month and $587,963 for the year to date, an increase of 22.2 percent. Orange (1.5 percent sales tax): $425,751 for the month and $1.833 million for the year to date, a 33 percent increase. Dogs Rescue Turns Into Book
Rosie the dog is very friendly. She was adopted by Lacey Hale when she was housed at the Lake Charles Animal Shelter only three months old. Rosie will be ten years old on May 15th. She enjoys her walks on St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church grounds where she loves chasing squirrels and taking naps. She is such an interesting dog that Lacey’s friend, Ricky Deville, wrote a book about her rescue. Lacey illustrated the book. Rosie loves children and people in general. Littering Fines Need To Be Enforced
Last month was the annual Trash Off sponsored by the Shangri La Botanical Gardens in Orange. Two ladies that have been actively involved each Spring in picking up litter are Sandra Cash and Sandra Hoke. The “Trashy Ladies” as they call themselves are part of the Keep Orange County Beautiful program. The two Sandras state without hesitation that there is too much litter in Orange County. Bill J. “B.J.” Orchid passed away on April 11, 2018, in Port Arthur, Texas. Born in Amity, Arkansas on September 30, 1933, he was the son of Eunice and Carl Orchid. Mr. Orchid graduated from Clarks High School in Clarks, Louisiana in 1953. He was a well-known high school athlete, particularly a baseball catcher. Mr. Orchid declined an athletic scholarship to Northwestern State University and instead enlisted in September 1953 in the U.S. Army. Crash reconstruction will close two sections of Interstate 10 in Jefferson County Thursday, April 12, the Department of Public Safety said in a news release. From 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., westbound traffic will be closed on the Neches River Bridge. Drivers can detour by taking Hwy. 87 or Hwy. 62 in Orange to Hwy. 73 in Bridge City back to I-10.
