Orange County Judge Brint Carlton announced Friday afternoon he has accepted a job in Austin and will be resigning as county judge, eight months before his term ends. Carlton lost his seat to Dean Crooks in the March Primary. Carlton issued his statement below. Bears Send Two To Rodeo Finals
Little Cypress-Mauriceville has several students, in high school and junior high/middle school, who are rodeo athletes. Two of these, sophomore Cade Cogbill and senior Callie Sattler placed in the top 10 in their region of the Texas High School Rodeo Association and will be competing in the State Finals Rodeo in Abilene during June. Cade qualified in steer wrestling and Callie in barrel racing. The Deweyville Lady Pirates won the 24-2A team title with 181.5 points, distancing themselves from second place Hull-Daisetta who tallied 141. Sabine Pass was third with 73 and West Hardin had 71.5. The Bridge City Cardinals were victorious over Hamshire-Fannett, 5-2 on Thursday. HF got on the board first in the second inning with two runs off of Peyton Havard, both unearned. One Man Shot On Park Street (Update)
A 23-year-old man who was shot three times with a handgun Thursday night at the Park Avenue Manor apartments is expected to survive. Orange Detective Captain Robert Enmon said the man underwent surgery Friday at a Beaumont hospital and his injuries appear not to be life-threatening. Police said DeMarcus Rogers was shot about 9 p.m. Thursday inside an apartment at the complex at 2540 West Park Avenue. Captain Enmon said Friday police are looking for a "person of interest" in connection with the shooting. The suspect was not at the apartment when police arrived. Stockman Guilty of Fraud
Steve Stockman, who served as Orange County's congressman for one term, is now in federal custody after a jury in Houston found him guilty of 23 of 24 felony charges involving fraud. Texas Tribune reports the jury deliberated about three days in a trial that took nearly a month. The fraud involves $1.25 million in contributions from conservative mega-donors. The donations were to be used to help educate voters and renovate the "Freedom House," a place for young Washington, D.C., interns to use.
