Greg Hackney from Gonzales, Louisiana took a commanding lead on Day One of the Sabine River Challenge with a bag of bass weighing 16-3 with a 5-14 kicker which was also the big bass of the day. All 108 fishermen crossed the stage and used the same word to describe the day...HOT! And it wasn't the fishing necessarily it was the heat. Orange Means Safety
The annual Orange Means Safety event will be held Friday, June 8, at the Texas Travel Information Center in Orange. The Texas Department of Transportation operates the information center on Interstate 10 just east of Orange and sponsors the safety event. Supervisor Manuel Ramon at the Travel Information Center said safety is the main emphasis for the event, but so is having fun learning about being safe. Thursday morning the Bassmaster Elites will take off from the Orange Boat Ramp. With the elimination of Louisiana waters many fishermen say it will be hard to match the 49-50 pounds of bass it took to win in 2013 and 2015. But there's a reason they're called the Elites so we'll see what happens as the weigh-in each day will be 3pm. City Starts Demolition Project
The city of Orange has started the annual demolition of dilapidated houses, including three on Main Avenue. The city uses federal Community Development Block Grants each year to remove the old houses, some of which have been abandoned. Public hearings were held on the demolitions and they were reviewed by the Orange Historical Preservation Commission. Plat Approved for Cypress Shadows Estate
Sam Peveto Tuesday got the first go-ahead for his Cypress Shadows Estate II subdivision when the Orange Planning and Zoning Commission approved the preliminary plat. The proposed 35.8-acre subdivision is off FM 1130. It is outside of the city limits, but within the city's extraterritorial jurisdiction, which means the city is allowed to approve the plans. The Orange County Sheriff's Office Employees Association awarded scholarships Wednesday to three graduating seniors who are children of deputies with the Sheriff's Office. Ty Hollier is a graduate of Bridge City High School and will be attending Lamar State College in Orange during the fall semester. Allison Harmon graduated from Vidor High School and plans to attend Blinn College at the Bryan campus.
