County employees with dependents will be paying less in health insurance next year. The Commissioners Court voted Tuesday to increase the county’s portion of dependent health insurance coverage for employees. The county has been covering 40 percent and next year will cover 50 percent of the dependent health care. Janet Encalade and her son Dr. Grant Encalade spent their foreign vacation on their feet all day in humid 103 degree temperatures. They can't wait to do it again. Encalade, who lives in Bridge City, is a dental hygienist for Green and Dileo Dentistry in Orange. She recently went as the only hygienist on a dental mission to Cholecta, Honduras, with seven dentists. That included Dr. Encalade, a dentist in Austin, who is a 2009 Bridge City High graduate. Man on Meth Arrested on Top of Shed
Orange police arrested a Louisiana man for possession of methamphetamine Saturday morning after a call that a shirtless man was climbing on the top of a shed in the yard of a house on Tenth Street. According to the police report, the man said he had been looking for his girlfriend and had gone up to search for her. He admitted to the officer he had been using meth. Orange Homeowners Facing Tax Increase
Property owners in the city of Orange are facing a tax rate increase because damage from Tropical Storm Harvey dropped property values $80.16 million. The same problem is facing other property-taxing entities in Orange County. The city's effective tax rate for the 2018-19 budget year is 5.2 cents per $100 valuation more than the current rate. The effective rate is the rate the city will need to charge to receive the same amount of property tax income as the previous year. Volleyball and football practice are underway although school hasn't started. The 2018-19 school year is around the corner and athletic directors around the area have completed their coaching staffs. Purgahn Following Pops Footsteps
Eleven year old Mattie Purgahn of Orange has had a busy summer on the links. Her play has qualified her for the Southern Texas PGA Junior Championship at The Woodlands this week. In July alone she played five tournaments with two firsts, two seconds, and a fifth place finish. The Little Cypress Intermediate fifth grader also won the first round in the 10/11 age group of the Drive, Chip and Putt Qualifier out of 17 girls.
