The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears dug themselves into a deep hole they could not crawl out of at the East Chambers Basketball Tournament. The Buna Lady Cougars took the lead early and then outlasted the determined LC-M girls 36-27 Wednesday in Winnie.
The first 3:39 of the game proved to be the difference. Buna came out of the gate running on all cylinders to take a 13-0 lead. Chelsea Perry finally got the Lady Bears on the board with a pair of baskets, the first coming after over four minutes were played.
The Lady Cougars were led by Laney Castie who dominated the paint with six points in the initial quarter and several rebounds. Also at the post position was Marcie Moss who chipped in with five points in the first eight minutes.
Trailing by ten at the half Little Cypress-Mauriceville actually outscored Buna in the second half by one point. Jacie Miller fouled out in the fourth quarter quarter, but was second high scorer for the Lady Bears with seven. LC-M was hotter from three point range sinking four compared to just one by the Lady Cougars. Renna Toomey and Alyssa McKellar both found the range from three for Little Cypress-Mauriceville.
Linda Riddick the coach of the Lady Bears could not pleased with the distribution of fouls called by the three referees in the game. LC-M only shot seven free throws sinking just one. Buna went to the line 18 times making nine free throws including seven by Moss.
The high scorer in the game was the Lady Cougars’ Moss with 11. Castie finished with 10 points all in the first half. Perry was the leading scorer for the Lady Bears with 10 points which included a pair of three-point baskets.
