The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears never trailed, but they never really pulled away from the Bridge City Cardinals Tuesday night. The Bears secured the victory late 44-35 over the Cardinals at the Bear Cave.
The win moves Little Cypress-Mauriceville (5-1) three games ahead of Bridge City (2-4) in the district standings. The Bears remain in second place one game ahead of the West Orange-Stark Mustangs which also won over the winless Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns 83-48 Tuesday night.
Jacolyen Provost got the first bucket of the game to give LC-M the initial lead. The Cardinals tied it, but the Bears scored the next five points including a three-pointer by Keegan Sonnier to take the lead 7-2 as the first quarter ended. They would never relinquish the advantage the rest of the game.
Stretching the lead to as many as 10 points LC-M got good play in the second quarter from Katon Brown who tallied seven of his 12 points in that period. Brandon Vela helped keep Bridge City close with three baskets. Two of them followed spectacular spinning moves in the lane. The two teams went to the locker room with LC-M up 23-15.
After a slow start to the second half the Bears once again moved ahead by 10 only to see the Cardinals answer. Ayson Simmons had a strong quarter with four points. Provost added two more baskets in the third stanza. Hunter Wiegreffe and Dan Piper both notched four points as the teams went to the final quarter with Little Cypress-Mauriceville still up by eight.
The Cardinals staged the strongest rally early in the fourth quarter. Justyn Romero went on a run with consecutive steals and layups that cut the lead to three points. Romero made another unbelievable theft and appeared to have made a remarkable shot for two points only to have a charging foul called on him as he was shooting the ball. That seemed to take the steam out of Bridge City which never got any closer.
Free throw shooting by the Bears sealed the deal down the stretch. Simmons made six straight free throws, and Braden Bridges scored his only two points of the night from the free throw line in the final four seconds to close out the scoring. LC-M was 11 of 17 from the charity stripe on the night compared to Bridge City’s just 5 of 12.
Simmons finished as the high scorer in the game with 14 points followed by Katon Brown with a dozen. Romero was the only Cardinal in double figures finishing with 11 points.
Little Cypress-Mauriceville travels to Orangefield on Friday to play the Bobcats. The Bears won a close game at home 57-53 in the first meeting between the two teams on January 17. Bridge City will entertain West Orange-Stark on Friday. Their first meeting at the Mustangs’ Gym was a tight contest 48-43 won by the Mustangs.
