The Deweyville Pirates were shutout in the season opener last week, but Coach Lance Dale says the Pirates are showing improvement and their opponent the East Chambers Buccaneers in that first game are very good. Dale hopes Deweyville can learn from its mistakes against the ninth ranked team in the state and playing tough competition will make the team better which is what they’re trying to do.
Friday night the Pirates play the Warren Warriors who have a new head coach in Jay Buckner and are led by fullback Chance McGallion according to Coach Dale. Buckner has installed a Spread Offense for the Warriors. Dale indicates Warren will run the ball out of its Spread, and McGallion is probably their most impressive offensive player.
Warren is based out of a 50 front on defense. The Warriors will also run a double eagle and a weak eagle look defensively with their odd man front. Dale adds that McGallion at linebacker is again the key player on defense.
Coach Dale is counting on further improvement from his Pirates Friday night. Dale states the Pirates must block a lot better than they did against East Chambers, and the coach expects a better game out of his offensive line. Triston Gordon needs to have a good game at quarterback as do the Henson brothers, Thomas and Mitchell, at running back. Defensively Deweyville needs to tackle better than the 26 missed tackles last week. Coach Dale believes the Pirates need to just get better every week and go play football.
The Deweyville Pirates travel to Warren to play the Warriors Friday night.
