The Bridge City Cardinals are the district champions for the first time since 2002. Coach Dwayne DuBois credits the Cardinal players for their efforts to win the district title. The coach admits the players have bought into want he has been preaching about love, trust, and they have become a team in every sense of the word. “That was our goal coming here, we want to win a district championship, and that’s our goal every year. They did it so my hat’s off to them, I’m proud of them,” DuBois praises.
Bridge City (6-2, 4-0) could get one of its Cardinals back from a bad wing. Seth Green sat out the Navasota game with a separated elbow, but is expected to be available this Friday night at Huffman.
DuBois indicates the Falcons have played through a number of injuries, but are still formidable on offense. Huffman (4-5, 1-3) runs the Spread and likes to throw the ball a lot. The Falcons’ quarterback is Dylan Lorfing who was an all-district wide receiver last season at Huffman. At running back is Camron McMahon who has been a starter since the mid-point of last season. The Falcons have had five or six key starters injured this season, but DuBois is confident Coach Mike McEachern will have his team at Huffman ready to play.
On defense the Huffman Hargrave Falcons base out of a 4-3, but Coach DuBois does not anticipate seeing much of that in the game against his Cardinals. DuBois thinks he will see more of a 6-2 or a 5-3 stack look with an extra defensive lineman replacing a secondary player since the Falcons probably do not think the Cardinals will throw the ball much.
Bridge City will start its run in the state playoffs next week. DuBois says right now the Cardinals are focusing on the Falcons and going undefeated in district. DuBois states, “We’re not going to look past Huffman. It’s going to be a dogfight at their place. We’re going to go one game at a time and then we’ll look at the playoffs.” A victory at Huffman will give Bridge City an undisputed district title and will eliminate any need for a tiebreaker, which the Cardinals would have the advantage anyway.
Bridge City travels to Huffman on Friday night. The kickoff between the Cardinals and the Falcons will be at 7:00 PM.
