It is down to the final game for the Bridge City Cardinals to earn a berth in the post season. The Cardinals lost two players to concussions last week, Kevin Ross and Rylan Ply. Bridge City does get back the services of two running backs this week, Max Baker and Andy Lara.
Coach Dwayne DuBois expects to see the ball in the air when the Cardinals play the Huffman Falcons on Friday. The Falcons use the same Spread Offense as they have for the last decade. They primarily throw the ball out of the Spread, in fact have had a couple games this year with more than 50 passes thrown. DuBois predicted, “We should see an aerial attack this week.”
Throwing the football for Huffman is sophomore Justin Shively who throws a good ball and has some tall receivers who can go get it. The Falcons have scored some points this year and will use Kutter Tucker to run the football against the Cardinals to mix things up on occasions.
Huffman maybe small in size on defense, but DuBois said the Falcons are very active and are no push overs defensively. Their defensive line only has a couple of players over 200 pounds, so they are a little undersized, but they are active. The Falcons will probably show a 6-2 defense with eight men in the box in an effort to stop Bridge City’s Slot T Offense. “They’re going to stack the box as most teams do.” DuBois indicated.
The defensive leader for Huffman is Noah Thomas a defensive end who stands over six-feet tall and weighs 200 pounds. He epitomizes the very active Falcon defenders. Linebacker David King and safety Jacob Hortch are also standouts defensively for Huffman.
Friday’s matchup between the Cardinals and Falcons will be the final game of the season for one of them. The fourth playoff spot in District 10-4A, Division I, will be on the line. The winner is in, the loser is out.
Coach DuBois stated Bridge City has something to play for and provided the keys for the Cardinals to advance to the post season for a third straight year. Like every week Bridge City must avoid turnovers which the Cardinals have had a propensity for this season. Next the coach wants the Cardinals to control the line of scrimmage on both offense and defense, to keep the Bridge City running game moving and the Huffman flying circus on the sidelines. “We’re looking for a good week of practice just to rebound from a loss and have a real solid outing this week,” DuBois concluded.
The Bridge City Cardinals play the Huffman Falcons on Friday night. The kickoff at Larry B. Ward Stadium in Bridge City is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
