LCM’s Jeremiah Armstrong hunts down a running back
The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears lost the district opener at Silsbee last week. Fortunately, there were no injuries for the Bears in the setback. This week LC-M faces an old rival the Bridge City Cardinals.
Bears’ Head Coach Randy Crouch says the Cardinals are led on offense by their quarterback Byron Trahan and fullback Cayce Draper. Trahan does a good job running the Slot-T offense for Bridge City. He can run the ball and throw it when necessary. Draper is a very dangerous back and has rushed for a lot of yards for the Cardinals.
Bridge City is not limited to just those two excellent players on offense. Crouch points out the Cardinals have an experienced line and will give the ball to their other backs to spread the field. “Even though they are a tight formation team, it looks like they are only running it in one area, but they spread the ball around, and they can attack many areas of the field,” Crouch emphasizes.
The Bears have moved to the Spread formation on offense. Crouch anticipates a tough battle against a gritty Bridge City defensive unit. The Cardinals are an even front team on defense with either 4-2-5 or 4-3 looks. Their defensive line seems pretty strong from what Coach Crouch indicates he has seen on film. He adds the Cardinals run to the ball extremely well. Bridge City held Cleveland to just a field goal in the opening game of district. Crouch concludes, “They create a lot of challenges, and defensively they’re a solid unit.”
LC-M wants to even its district record with a win against Bridge City. Coach Crouch breaks down the keys to victory for the Bears. They need to execute consistently. The Bears did block better at times in the Silsbee game and their effort was good. The coach appreciated the team cutting down on the penalties in the last game, but the Bears still need to watch out for turnovers.
Crouch thinks LC-M is really close to becoming a solid team. He reminds that anyone can beat anyone else in this district any given week, and the Bears just need to be ready for their night.
Friday night the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears host the Bridge City Cardinals. The game will be carried live on KOGT beginning at 7:00 PM. The rebroadcast of the game will be 7:00 AM Saturday on KOGT.
