The Orangefield Bobcats defeated their bayou rivals the Bridge City Cardinals Friday afternoon in the Bridge City Cardinal Classic basketball tournament. The 44-40 victory earned Orangefield third place in the tournament.
After the two teams exchanged three-point baskets in the opening two minutes, the Bobcats and Cardinals stayed tied to the four-minute mark of the first quarter. Dylan Williams scored a field goal, was fouled, and sank the free throw to give Orangefield a three-point lead with 3:55 left in the first. Zach Dischler sank his second three of the quarter to increase the lead. The Bobcats would not trail the rest of the game.
Orangefield pushed the lead to ten points at the end of the second quarter. Alex Catt sank a three-pointer. Dischler made a steal which he converted into a three-point play with a basket and a free throw to close out the half with the Bobcats leading 29-19.
Bridge City attempted a comeback in the third quarter. The Cardinals got two key field goals from Kolten Weeks. Coy Bryant swished the net with a three-pointer at the buzzer to make the score 37-32 after three periods.
The fourth quarter started slowly as the two teams were scoreless for almost five minutes to start the period. Hunter Wiegreffe tallied underneath to cut the lead to three, but Williams answered at the other end to put Orangefield back up by five with two minutes to play. He would add another field goal to give the Bobcats a seven-point advantage with 1:25 left in the game.
Dischler made one of three free throws, and Willams sank both ends of a one-and-one to give Orangefield a 43-36 lead with 41 seconds to play. The Cardinals could only answer with a Caleb Honeycutt free throw and a buzzer beater for three again by Bryant.
Three Bobcats Catt, Williams, and Dischler scored ten points. Williams scored six of his points in the last two minutes to help secure the win.
Bridge City’s Wiegreffe was the leading scorer in the game with 12 points. Honeycutt and Bryant both contributed 7 points for the Cardinals.
In the semifinals, Vidor defeated Orangefield Friday morning, 46-32, and Port Neches-Groves overcame Bridge City 48-34 earlier on Friday.
