When director John Thomas started the OCARC Fishing Tournament 29 years ago, sure it was to promote the center for special needs citizens, but it was also to encourage families to fish and get the kids to start fishing. Craig Stark and his daughter Windy spent the day together with a friendly competition and Windy won the White Perch division by beating her dad by .02 pounds. While the tournament lacked numbers in the Speckled Trout division, Thomas said it’s been a long time since he’s seen that many reds, grinnel, and black drum weighed in. Young Ann Borel was the big winner, placing in four categories and winning two of them.
On Sept. 1 the legal limit for bass will be dropped to 12″ in the river and recognizing that more will be weighed in next year, Thomas has taken steps to add a catch and release tank next year so they can be returned to the river. “Starting next year if you turn in your bass alive, you will get an extra half pound added to your total,” Thomas said.
