Veterans will have a special reserved parking space at the West Orange City Hall in recognition of the service of one former West Orange resident. The City Council unanimously approved on Monday designating a space to honor Tim Hankins in the parking lot at the front of City Hall by Western Avenue.
The request for the reserved space was made by Kenneth Droddy to honor Hankins who did 11 tours of combat with special forces before losing his life in October. Droddy said the city would only have to pay for erecting the pole to hold the sign, stating he would pay for the sign and to get it here. The date of a special ceremony for the dedication of the parking space will be determined later. Droddy added that other veterans could be recognized by adding signs in their honor beneath the one for Hankins.
The City Council approved eight modifications to the Employee Policy Manual. The changes involved policies dealing with employee health insurance, vacation leave, sick leave benefits, death in an employee’s family, and leave of absence without pay. Mayor Roy McDonald indicated the manual is reviewed periodically having last been done in August of 2015 and September 2008 before that.
West Orange has called a special meeting of the City Council in two weeks on June 26 to review the city audit that is being done. Curtis Craig was hired to replace the accounting firm of Sandersen and Scheffer which failed to produce the audit after several months.
