Tuesday is the election to create an Orange County hospital district. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and KOGT will have live coverage of the returns.
Early voting for the hospital district ended Friday wtih a total of 5,603 ballots cast. Of those, 4,796 were in person, 805 were mailed and two came from out of the country.
The Vidor early voting box had the most with 1,469, followed by Orange with 1,441, Bridge City with 1,360, and Mauriceville with 526.
Commissioners Court called for the election after a citizens petition was turned in. The date was set by state law under the rules of petitioning.
Registered Orange County voters who did not vote early must go to their local election box Tuesday. A legal photo identification is required. The county has 34 boxes.
If voters approve, an independent hospital district will be formed. The district will be like the drainage district and the port district in Orange with an elected board of directors and taxing powers.
The petition has set a maximum tax of 18 cents per $100 valuation on property, which means the owner of $100,000 worth of property would pay a maximum of $180 a year. The board of directors could set a lower tax rate.
