Almost as many concerned citizens, about 50, attended the public hearing Friday on the proposed tax rate increase as participated in the first public hearing on Tuesday night. The hearing Friday also lasted over three hours with citizens questioning the Commissioners Court on its need to raise taxes for the services provided to the citizens.
Rhonda Vercher summed up the sentiment of most of those attending the public hearing. Vercher said she pays her taxes, but cannot see supporting an increase in taxes until the county cuts some dead weight from its budget, and the people in her neighborhood see some jobs get done by the county.
County Judge Brint Carlton thanked the citizens for their attendance at the public hearing Friday just as he did on Tuesday night. Judge Carlton indicated he really does appreciate having the input from the public in preparation of the county’s budget.
At the beginning of the public hearing Carlton announced that the Commissioners Court has changed the date for adopting the tax rate and the budget for next year. The Court will now vote on approving both at its meeting on September 20.
