Mold was plaguing some Orange County food businesses and leading to demerits from Orange County Health Inspector James Scales. Scales went to 21 food-related businesses in the last part of April and gave only four perfect scores, including one to Lucy’s Cafe on MLK Drive in Pinehurst.
The Star Stop on Highway 12 in Mauriceville tied for the lowest score with the Waffle House on Highway 62 in Orange. Both had an 84.
The other stores with scores of 100 were Crawfish Capitol Sales in Mauriceville, Dollar General in Orangefield and New Beginninz Academy on Meeks Drive in Orange. Scales made pre-opening inspections with no scores to The Fajita Factory on Texas Avenue in Bridge City and Delta Food Mart on Texas Avenue in Bridge City.

Susie’s Concessions, 985 North Main Street in Vidor: 99. Walls, ceiling and screens around the fryer and grill needed to be cleaned of old grease and foods.
Gonzales Food Truck No. 2, Highway 62 at FM 105 in Orangefield: 98. The truck had hot water issues that needed to be corrected.
Tropicana Ice Cream Parlor, 2637 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 98. Dishes were inside the hand-washing station. Paper towels are required at hand-washing stations and store was using cloth towels.
Family Dollar, 115 West Bolivar Street in Vidor: 98. The area around the dumpster needed to be cleaned of trash on the ground. The back storage area needed to be cleaned and organized.
Subway at Pilot Travel Center, 2205 Highway 62 in Orange: 98. The walk-in cooler and freezer needed to be sealed.
Domino’s Pizza, 7166 North Highway 87 in Orange: 97. The mop sink needed to be used properly. Inspector found dirty dishes stored in the mop sink. The walls needed to be cleaned of old foods and dirt.
Dairy Queen, 2426 16th Street in Orange: 97. Slight mold was inside the ice machine. The toaster needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Paul’s Seafood Connection, 7226 Highway 12 in Vidor: 96. Dates were needed on products inside the coolers and freezers. Employees needed hair restraints and sleeves on T-shirts. The back storage area needed to be cleaned. Unused equipment needed to be repaired or removed.
Smart Stop Food Mart, 811 Strickland Drive in Orange: 92. Black mold was inside the ice machine. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler and in the storeroom. Drinks should be six inches off the flood. Inspector found several expired foods on shelves. Floors throughout the store needed to be cleaned of old foods and dirt.
M & S Grocery, 10876 FM 1130 in Orange: 91. The store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Dates were needed on sandwiches inside the walk-in cooler. Gasket on the reach-in freezer needed to be replaced. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler and on the sales floor. Drinks should be six inches off the floor. Damaged or missing floor tiles needed to be repaired or replaced. Restrooms needed to be cleaned. A yellow substance was found on walls next to the toilet and near the hand-washing sink. Inspector said it needed to be cleaned or repaired immediately.
Shell Food Mart, 3118 Edgar Brown Drive in Orange: 89. Black mold was on the slushy drink dispensers. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Dates were needed on sandwiches inside the reach-in coolers. Drinks were stored on the flood inside the walk-in cooler instead of the required six inches off the floor. The ceiling inside the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned of dust. Mold was on a wall inside the storage room. Holes were in the storage room wall. Store advised to move the ice machine to a different area from the smoking and gambling machine area.
Guadalajara, 95 Strickland Drive in Orange: 88. Fajita chicken was at unsafe temperatures. Inspector found a couple of clean dishes with old foods still on them. They were pulled and re-washed. A hole was on the inside of the walk-in cooler and needed to be repaired. Cell phones were being charged on storage shelves and an employee was using a cell phone inside the kitchen. The Vent-a-Hood above the fryers needed to be cleaned of old foods. Floors and walls throughout the restaurant needed to be cleaned of old foods. Damaged walls and ceilings needed to be repaired. Baseboards inside the restrooms needed to be cleaned.
Sunrise Donuts, 2830 Western Avenue in West Orange: 86. Sausage, egg and boudain were not at proper temperatures. Kolaches were not marked for times to be safe at room temperature. Dates were needed on products. Paper towels were needed at the hand-washing station. Plastic grocery bags were being used to store raw bacon inside the reach-in freezer. Pan liners were being used multiple times rather than once only. Floors throughout the store needed to be cleaned of old foods. Ceiling tiles were damaged. Inspector recommended cleaning more often.
Shell Star Stop, 11384 Highway 12 in Mauriceville: 84. Raw chicken was stored improperly inside the walk-in cooler. The ice scoop was on top of the ice machine. Chemicals were stored above packed foods on the back storage shelves. The store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Paper towels were needed inside the restroom. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Floors throughout needed to be cleaned of old foods and dirt. Restrooms needed to be cleaned. Inspector recommended more general cleaning.
Waffle House, 2610 Highway 62 in Orange: 84. Diced ham and onions were not at proper temperatures. Black mold was inside the ice machine and drink dispensers. Inspector found clean dishes with foods still on them. The front cooler was holding water next to the grill. Dishes were sitting inside the hand-washing sink. Reach-in coolers had rusted shelves. Wiping cloths were stored on top of the counter inside of sanitizer buckets. Vent-a-Hood, the inside of the reach-in coolers, floors and walls needed to be cleaned of old foods. Inspector recommended more general cleaning.
