Orange County food businesses were spiffed up in the first part of January. All but one of the businesses scored A’s in the health and the lowest score was a B+.
County Health Inspector James Scales went to 16 businesses during the period. Four earned perfect scores and the lowest score was an 89. Scales also made two pre-opening inspections with no scores.
The perfect scores went to Bright Horizon Learning Center on North Main Street in Vidor, Fastlane at 695 West Railroad Street in Vidor, Dollar General at 1752 Highway 12 in Vidor, and Valero Corner Store at 1010 North Main Street in Vidor.
The pre-opening inspections were for a soup kitchen at Trinity Baptist Church on Highway 12 in Vidor and Blackbeard’s at 439 West Freeway in Vidor.

Subway, 1545 North Main Street in Vidor: 98. No hot water was available. Inspector will follow-up on the problem because businesses must have hot water available at all times.
Taco Bell, 835 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 93. Walls and floors needed to be cleaned of old foods. Inspector said employees needed to pay close attention to the floors around and behind storage racks inside the walk-in cooler. The area above the hot line needed to be cleaned of old dust. The inside of food warmers needed to be cleaned of old foods. Light shields were needed at the Vent-a-Hood.
Papa John’s Pizza, 2305 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 98. Storage shelves used for clean dishes were rusted and needed to be repaired or replaced.
CVS Pharmacy, 2425 North 16th Street in Orange: 97. Thermometers were needed inside the reach-in coolers. The inside of the milk cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods. The toilet inside the men’s restroom was broken.
Get-N-Go, 1150 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 96. All foods, including sandwiches, inside coolers needed to be dated. The store was storing drinks on floors inside the walk-in cooler and in the front area. Drinks should be six inches off the floor. Light shields were needed inside the walk-in cooler. Damaged ceiling tiles needed to be replaced. Store needed to check dates on all foods.
Kwick Stop, 3110 16th Street in Orange: 95. Cappuccino and slush machines needed to be cleaned of old foods and mold. Light shields were needed throughout the store. Several areas of the floor had broken tiles that needed repairing. Rust was in the ice machine.
Market Basket, 3709 16th Street in Orange: 95. Inspector found several dented cans. Shelves were rusted in one of the freezers in the sales area. Rusted shelves were holding produce. Rusted baseboards, ceilings and door frames were inside the meat department cutting room. Floors inside the meat department and inside the milk walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods and trash. The floors inside the walk-in cooler-freezer in the back storage area needed to be cleaned.
Market Basket Deli, 3709 16th Street in Orange: 95. Backing pans were damaged and needed to be replaced. Buckets were stored with food on floors throughout the kitchen area. Storage racks were rusted and needed to be repaired. Floors needed to be cleaned of old foods. Glass windows on the steam table needed to be replaced. Handles were needed on the glass windows at the steam table. Mold was between the glass on the meat storage and needed to be cleaned or replaced.
Super Stop, 2590 North Main Street in Vidor: 91. Sandwiches inside coolers needed to be dated. The store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Exposed wood was used for walls and as storage shelves inside the walk-in cooler. Ceiling and walls inside the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods and mold. The cabinet where drink syrup is stored needed to be cleaned of old foods. Light shields were needed inside the walk-in cooler and throughout the store. Inspector recommended “lots of cleaning.”
Cypress Plaza, 7014 Highway 87: 89. Mold and slime were inside the ice machine. Store did not have hot water. The store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Sandwiches inside the reach-in cooler needed dates. Hot water was not available at the hand-washing sink or in the restrooms.
