At approximately 3:00p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to a one vehicle crash on Highway 87 in Newton County. The crash occurred just south of Bleakwood.
A 2005 Mercury passenger vehicle was traveling southbound on Highway 87. For an unknown reason, the driver traveled off the roadway to the right. In an attempt to get the vehicle back onto the road, the driver veered back to the left causing the vehicle to spin across both northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 87. The vehicle continued off the roadway and struck a tree on the passenger-side of the vehicle.
The driver, a 64-year-old female from Orange, was flown by a medical airplane to Ben Taub hospital in Houston with serious injuries.
The passenger, a 52-year old female from Burkeville, was flown by medical helicopter to St. Elizabeth hospital with serious injuries.
Due to the severity of their injuries, the names will not be released until next of kin have been notified.
At the time of the crash, both occupants were wearing seat belts.
All information is preliminary as Troopers continue to investigate this crash.
