Collective bargaining negotiations should start between Orange County and the Sheriff’s Office Employees Union in about two weeks. Commissioner Jody Crump serves on the county’s negotiation team, and confirmed Wednesday that attorneys for the union have agreed to meet with representatives and attorneys for Orange County on Wednesday, April 12. The current collective bargaining agreement with the Sheriff’s union expired in 2013 and negotiations have been at an impasse since then.
The discussion of continuing certificate pay for Sheriff’s employees that have received additional training has been a bone of contention between the two parties at recent Commissioners Court meetings, but County Judge Brint Carlton believes it may have helped bring them together to talk about a new contract next month. Carlton who also serves on the county’s negotiation team said there are two days of talks scheduled at this point for April 12 and April 13.
The Commissioners Court approved this week continuing certificate pay through May 7, but to stop paying it at that point if there was not a new collective bargaining agreement. Sergeant Jimmy LeBoeuf a representative for the employees’ union with the Sheriff’s Office contacted Judge Carlton last week that the union was interested in starting talks again.
