Eight elected officials received their oaths of office Sunday in the 128th District Courtroom at the Orange County Courthouse. One of those sworn in was Orange County Sheriff Keith Merritt.
During his acceptance speech at the ceremony Sunday Merritt announced this would be his final four-year term as sheriff. After more than 30 years in law enforcement Merritt said it’s time to go. The sheriff admitted he is getting up in age and would like to do some other things with his wife Marlene before they get too old. His health is still very good according to Merritt as he has only taken one sick day in 22 years.
Merritt indicated he has asked many other retirees when they knew it’s time to retire, and they all said he would know in his heart. “I think it’s time for me to go, let someone else come in. I don’t know who it will be, but I’m sure Orange County will be in good hands,” Merritt concluded. He has served as the sheriff of Orange County since January 2009.
