Early voting locations for the March primary were approved by the Commissioners Court Tuesday. That caused Assistant County Attorney Doug Manning who is a Concealed Handgun License instructor to remind license holders the rules concerning handguns in polling locations have not changed.
Manning informed that the previous Concealed Carry Law for firearms as well as the new Open Carry Law prohibits the possession of guns in any polling location. Licensed handgun owners, Manning suggested, need to be careful not to carry their weapons into a polling location which is designated by the extent of the voting signs at a polling location. He suggested it might be a good idea for the county to have signs put up just as a reminder for citizens that handguns are not allowed in areas where voting is being conducted.
Several individuals have made inquiries to Manning concerning their rights to carry their guns under the new Open Carry Law. Manning asked the media to spread the word that the new law only covers licensed handgun owners. He emphasized that citizens are not allowed to carry their handguns in public unless they have received an Open Carry License or permit. The Texas legislature was considering a general open carry provision, but it failed to be approved in the last session.
