Renovations to the Orange County Courthouse as part of the Way Service energy efficiency improvements should begin in March. The Commissioners Court heard Tuesday from Phillip Nolan in the Maintenance Department that the contractors have agreed to do work on the air conditioning unit for the courthouse building beginning on Friday, March 24. Nolan informed the Commissioners that the work will be done on that Friday through the weekend and should be completed by Monday, March 27. There will be no air conditioning in the building during that time, but the Commissioners Court decided not to close the Courthouse since most of the work would be done on a weekend when the building is closed to the public.
Commissioners approved the Sheriff’s Office to apply for a grant from the Office of the Governor for body worn cameras. The grant will be an 80 to 20 match. If the Sheriff’s Office receives the grant it will pay 20 percent of the cost for the body cameras.
The Court welcomed new Commissioners Johnny Trahan and John Gothia. The two commissioners had their first split vote on a proposed rule for the pay matrix concerning exempt and non-exempt county employees. Trahan joined Commissioners Barry Burton and Jody Crump by voting in favor of keeping the pay matrix from November 30, 2016 which has been on hold since a federal injunction was issued on November 22 that halted the new matrix which was to go into effect on December 1. Gothia and County Judge Brint Carlton were in favor of implementing the proposed December 1 pay matrix. Four employees in Orange County are affected by the ruling.
