Keeping the environment green is a family tradition for Sandra Hoke. She was married to Mike Hoke a strong advocate for taking care of nature and the former administrator of the Shangri La Botanical Gardens in Orange.
This week Sandra spoke to the Commissioners Court about recycling in Orange County. She joked that the best kept secret is that there is recycling in the county on Wednesdays and Saturdays at the county dump. Hoke exclaimed, “I think it’s real important to recycle.”
She encourages everyone to recycle. Hoke provided tips for the Courthouse which can be adopted by other offices to keep their businesses or agencies green. The first suggestion was a container marked as being for plastic bottles only near trash cans which will fill up quickly according to Hoke. Another bin could be in offices for collecting paper that would normally be thrown away. Hoke pointed out shredded documents can also be recycled they just need to all be put in a bag which then taken to the recycling center.
Plastics, newspaper, other paper, cardboard, and cans can all be recycled. Metal can even be taken to certain dealers for money. Sandra told of how she took some metal debris from her church to S&S Metal and got $600 for it.
Recycling is free at the Orange County landfill located on FM 1442. Orange County citizens just sign their name when entering the landfill, give the attendant their address, and go to the recycle bins.
