Elyse Walker of Vidor High School was the Declamation winner at the 120th Annual Miriam Lutcher Stark Reading Contest and Mariana Gonzales (below) of West Orange-Stark was the Interpretive reading winner.
Walker read “Why domestic violence victims don’t leave” by Leslie Morgan Steiner and Gonzales read “Funny you don’t look autistic by Michael McCreary.
Second place honors in Declamation went to Hannah Edwards of Bridge City who read “This is water” by David Foster Wallace. Catalina Lawley of Orangefield was second in Interpretation with her reading of “Desiree’s Baby” by Kate Chopin.
First and second place winners receive gifts and scholarship money.
