After an hour and ten minute lightning delay, the Vidor Pirates came out and did what they do, beating the LCM Bears 29-12 to improve to 2-0 in district play.
What they do is run a ball control offense and back it up with some hard nosed defense.
The Pirates opened the game with an 8 minute, 15 play drive that resulted in Jason Watson scoring from 17 yards. The Bears would respond with a 10 play drive that started at the 50. Da’Marion Morris ran it in from 11 but the PAT was missed after a low snap, leaving the score 7-6 in the second quarter.
Then right before the half, the Pirates put together another patented 12 play drive with Layne Wilhelm bulling over from the one. They added a two point conversion by Weston Sepulvado to make it 15-6 at the half.
But as they did last week against Huffman, the Bears came out strong in the second half, taking the kickoff and driving 69 yds. where Morris would score his second TD, this time from 34. The two point try was no good but the Bears appeared back in the game, down 15-12.
When LCM got the ball back late in the third, they were driving near midfield when QB Ashton Landry was hit as he was attempting to pass. The ball came loose and the Pirates recovered.
Then it was back to the ground a pound. A seven minute, 54 yard drive that took 12 plays, with Wihelm scoring his second touchdown. Another two point conversion and the Pirates were up by two scores 23-12 with 9:37 left in the game.
The Bears would have two more shots to score before Vidor put the icing on the cake with Wilhelm scoring his third TD on a 19 yd scamper, against what was by then, a tired LCM defense.
The Pirates rushed for 273 yards, finishing with 286 total. Sepulvado had 79 yards and Wilhelm 78. QB Eli Simmons and RB’s Watson and Ricky Gall also contributed to the Pirates Slot-T Attack.
Morris was the bright spot offensively for the Bears, finishing with 115 yards on just 11 carries.
LCM (1-1) will play at (2-0) Lumberton and Vidor will welcome Livingston (1-1) on Friday.
