
Tuesday is Election Day for amendments to the Texas Constitution. Eight propositions are on the ballot. If voters approve them, they will become law in the state.
Election hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters must go to their assigned voting box listed on their voter registration card. They will also need an accepted legal photo identification card.
A total of 1,695 Orange County voters cast early ballots. The number of mail-in votes squeezed out a lead over in-person votes. The Orange County Elections Administration Office reports 853 mail-in ballots, 841 in-person ballots, and one from the military.
The county had four early voting sites with the Orange Public Library having the most with 342. The county airport site had 95 votes, the expo center had 197, and the community center in Vidor had 207.
The amendments are:
Proposition 1: Allow the charitable organizations of professional sports teams to conduct raffles at rodeo arenas.
Proposition 2: Allow counties to issued bonds to pay for infrastructure and transportation projects in undeveloped and blighted areas.
Proposition 3: An amendment to prohibit the state or political subdivisions to limit religious services or organizations.
Proposition 4: Change eligibility for state judges on the supreme court, court of criminal appeals, court of appeals, and district judges.
Proposition 5: Authorize the Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct to accept and investigate complaints against candidates running for state judicial offices.
Proposition 6: Allow residents of nursing homes and assisted living centers to designated an essential caregiver who may not be prohibited from visiting.
Proposition 7: Allow legislature to extend homestead tax exemption to surviving spouse of disabled individual if the spouse is 55 years or older.
Proposition 8: Allow legislature to allow homestead tax exemption for surviving spouse of member of military who is fatally injured in line of duty.
