
It will not be official for two months, but Clark Slacum is retiring at the end of May as the County Engineer for the county. The announcement will be on the agenda for the next Commissioners Court meeting to be held on Tuesday, March 23.
Slacum has served as the County Engineer since May 21, 2012. He previously worked for many years with the Texas Department of Transportation.
Action by the Commissioners may include authorizing Human Resource Director Lori Ardoin to begin taking steps to identify potential candidates for appointment to the position. Qualified candidates shall be a licensed professional engineer experienced in road construction and maintenance. The candidates must meet the qualifications required by the Texas Department of Transportation for its district engineers.
The Court will consider possibly extending the declaration of local disaster for the severe winter storms of “Uri” and “Viola” that hit the county in February. Updates will be given to the Commissioners on previous disasters regarding Hurricanes Harvey and Laura and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The Commissioners Court will issue a letter of support for the Orangefield Water Supply Corporation’s efforts to improve wastewater infrastructure within their service area. Orange County in the last few weeks applied for a grant on behalf of the Orangefield Water Supply Corporation which is limited in its grant application capabilities.
The lease agreement with Dade Phelan the Texas Speaker of the House of Representatives should be renewed at Tuesday’s meeting. The office in the county owned building on FM 1442 was flooded during Harvey and is now ready for use by Phelan.
The Commissioners will proclaim April 2021 as Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month. County Judge John Gothia will issue a proclamation declaring the month of April as such.
The meeting of the Commissioners Court will be held at the Administration Building of the Courthouse located at 123 South Sixth Street. The meeting will convene at 2:00 PM on Tuesday.
