The West Orange-Stark Mustangs are one game away from making their ninth appearance in the Super Bowl of High School Football. The team standing in their way are the (13-1) Sinton Pirates, the Champions of 4A D2 Region IV.
Sinton is a town of 5500 in San Patricio County near the coast, about 15 miles north of Corpus Christi. The Mustangs played them in the semifinals in 2014, winning the game 42-21.
Like most, the game will be focused on stopping the run for both teams. But we should say STOPPING THE RUN in all caps as the two featured running backs come in with a combined 5500 yards rushing.
Mykha Green (#8) has rushed for 3332 yards for an average of 238 yards per game. He’s also crossed the goal line 48 times. The Mustangs counter with their own Superman, Khelvy Jefferson who has rushed for almost 2200 yds. and 31 touchdowns. Of course to have two guys with those kind of numbers you have to have a good offensive line and both teams are proud of the ones they have.
Defensively both teams run the 50 defense. Sinton is lead by linebacker Jonathan Rivas (#7) and strong safety Marcos Zapata (#9). They give up an average of 20 points per game. Their only loss this season was a 56-55 loss to Cuero, which they avenged last week by beating the Gobblers on a last second field goal 45-42.
The game will be played at Rhodes Stadium in Katy which is the older of the two stadiums. It will be Friday at 7pm. Port Arthur Memorial will be playing at the other stadium at the same time, it’s known as Legacy Stadium.
