Sheriff Havard has made a second arrest in Deweyville Shooting
On Thursday, February 26, 2026, at approximately 3:35 p.m., Sheriff Colton Havard and Sergeant Chad Ainsworth served an arrest warrant on Russell Gene Fitts at a residence located in the 10000 block of Old Highway 87 in Orange County. Fitts was wanted out of Newton County for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon (F3).
The arrest warrant for Fitts stemmed from the shooting that occurred near the intersection of County Road 4213 and County Road 4229 in Deweyville. Based on evidence gathered from both scenes, along with witness interviews, investigators determined that Fitts, a convicted felon, was in possession of a rifle at a location other than his residence at the time of the incident.
Evidence was presented to Judge Michael Greer, Justice of the Peace Precinct 3, who found probable cause and issued the arrest warrant.
Fitts was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Newton County Jail.
