Restaurant and food businesses did better during April inspections than those in recent months. Orange County Health Inspector James Scales made 20 visits during the first part of April and handed out six perfect scores. The lowest score was an 86, with the Waffle House on Highway 62 and A-1 Smoke Shop on North Main Street in Vidor receiving the rating. The past few months, a few restaurants scored in the 70s.
Crawfish Capitol Sales in Mauriceville was the only business earning 100 and the other five were school cafeterias. The perfect ones were Vidor High, Vidor Middle, Bridge City Intermediate, Bridge City Elementary and West Orange-Stark High.

Woogies Sandwiches, 1165 North Main Street in Vidor: 98. Restaurant did not have food handler certifications. Unused equipment and rubbish in the back storage area needed to be removed.
Welcome Cafe, 1225 Highway 12 in Vidor: 97. Dates were needed on products inside coolers. Side door inside kitchen needed to be resealed.
Taco Bell, 2929 16th Street in Orange: 96. Floors inside the walk-in freezer were damaged and needed to be repaired. Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned of old grease. Restaurant did not have current food service permit, health inspection report and certified food manager certificates posted in front.
Susie’s Concessions, 985 North Main Street in Vidor: 94. Meat products were stored improperly inside coolers. Dates were needed on products inside coolers. Walls and equipment near fryers needed to be cleaned of grease.
Paul’s Seafood Connection, 7226 Highway 12 in Vidor: 93. Mold was inside ice machine. Chemicals were stored with foods on the storage shelves. Vent-a-Hood inside and outside needed to be cleaned of old grease. Broken and unused equipment needed to be discarded.
Dollar General, 4080 Highway 105 in Vidor: 93. Inspector found several dented cans and pulled expired foods from shelves. Spider webs were on ceilings, walls, storage shelves and on product on sales floor. Storage shelves needed to be cleaned of dust and dirt. Ceiling tiles were damaged and missing. Store did not have current food service permit posted in front of store. Inspector planned follow-up visit to check on cleaning, organizing, repairs and pest management.
Express Mart, 1745 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 93. Inspector pulled several drinks from reach-in cooler that were past expiration dates. Hot water was not reaching required temperatures and needed to be repaired immediately. Inspector prohibited cooking until the hot water was corrected. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Current food service permit, health inspection report and certified food manager certificates were not posted in front of store.
Sonic Drive In, 2805 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 92. Employee was using cups to fill ice for drinks instead of ice scoop. Pipe to the motor inside the walk-in cooler needed to be repaired. Fry warmer was not working. Vent-a-Hood area around fryers and grill needed to be cleaned. Coolers and freezers needed to be cleaned of old foods. Walk-in freezer door was not closing completely. Inspector reported “lots of maintenance issues” needed to be addressed.
Little Caesar’s Pizza, 866 North Main Street in Vidor: 92. Front cooler motor was dripping water into a container and needed to be repaired. Paper towels were needed at the hand-washing station. Employee was wearing improper jewelry. Employee food and drinks were stored improperly inside coolers and freezers. Boxes of foods were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Oven and vent system needed to be cleaned of old foods and dust. Outside area at the back door needed to be cleaned. Old furniture needed to be discarded from property.
Vidor Superette, 2410 North Main Street in Vidor: 91. Faucet at the back sink was duct-taped together and needed to be repaired. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Employee drinks were inside walk-in cooler. Drinks were stored on floor inside the walk-in cooler. Restroom did not have hot water.
HEB Pantry, 2424 16th Street in Orange: 90. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Most of them were milk products. Hand-washing station in meat department had dripping water and needed to be repaired. Reach-in freezers on sales floor had ice build-up inside and on products. Several gnats were on the produce sales floor. Store did not have current food service permit or current health inspection report posted in front.
Donut Hole, 6309 FM 1442 in Orangefield: 89. Sausage and boudin were not at proper temperatures. Store did not keep a record of holding times for sausage and boudin out at room temperature. Dates were needed on all products. Pan liner was used multiple times to bake kolaches. Store did not have current food service permit.
105 A-1 Smoke Shop, 5320 North Main Street in Vidor: 86. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Ice scoop was on top of ice machine. Inside of the microwave oven needed to be cleaned of old foods. Restroom did not have hot water. Dates were needed on products inside coolers. Inspector found dead bugs on top of equipment. Lights were needed inside storage room. Light shields were needed inside walk-in cooler. Floor tiles were missing near storage room. Store did not have current health inspection report posted in front. Broken and unused equipment needed to be discarded.
Waffle House, 2610 Highway 62 in Orange: 86. Cubed ham and an entire cooler were not at proper temperatures and needed immediate repairs. Inspector found several cleaned dishes with old foods stuck on them. Front cooler next to the grill was holidng water and needed to be repairsed. Shelves inside coolers were rusted. Wiping cloths were stored improperly. Floors, especially near drains, needed to be cleaned of old foods and dirt. Back door needed to be resealed. Hand-washing sinks did not have sings posted. Food service permit needed to be posted in front.
