Back When
Back When Column If you know some local history, it's not hard to be a roads scholar in Orange. The prominent men running local government entities liked naming streets and roads after themselves and their friends. I am looking for help on some of the names, though the people who would have named them are long gone. Green Avenue comes from the original name of the Anglo settlement here. It was first called Green's Bluff, because the land along the curve of the Sabine River is the first high spot north from the mouth of the river. Traditionally credit is given to a ship captain, Reason … [Read more...] about Back When

Artist Creates Trees At Shangri La
Blue glass bottles hang overhead like leaves from a tree. The sunlight turns the glass into sparkling jewels. The light also drives away "the haints." For artist-welder Stephanie Dwyer, Southern bottle trees have driven away her demons. Dwyer spent weeks this spring in Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center constructing a quartet of 17-foot high bottle trees. The trunks curve gracefully and the branches reach out to intertwine. Instead of leaves, the blue bottles fit over the metal "twigs." Friday, Dwyer was back in Orange talking to visitors and students about her creation, … [Read more...] about Artist Creates Trees At Shangri La
Impact on Budget?
County Judge Brint Carlton received word of the lawsuit from a Sheriff’s deputy Thursday afternoon about 4:00, but had no comment on the details of it. With the news of the lawsuit Thursday the Court is in agreement it will … [Read more...] about Impact on Budget?
