The Pinehurst City Council Tuesday morning approved the budget for next year. The budget will be a tight one with the tax rate remaining 69.799 cents per 100 dollars value. There was a public hearing prior to the vote by the City Council, but there were no citizen comments during the hearing. Also the Council held a closed meeting as part of City Attorney Tommy Gunn’s annual evaluation. The City of Pinehurst and its sponsors hosted the Annual Senior Citizens Labor Day Picnic Monday. Ray Fontenot, 94, and Gwen Boehme, 95, received the oldest Senior Citizen Awards from Congressman Brian Babin and Pinehurst Mayor Pete Runnels. LCM Looks For First Win At GCM
The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears lost a tough, physical game to Barbers Hill last week. Coach Randy Crouch states the Bears may be a little beat up after the game, but are ready to battle again. The Patriots of Goose Creek Memorial are next up for the Bears. Crouch says the Patriots use the Spread offense, but will also run the football. There is no quit in the Deweyville Pirates, and after last week there is a win as the Pirates won their first game of the season over the Warren Warriors. Coach Lance Dale is excited for his kids getting their first victory of the season. When you're traveling through Orange history, don't get the Rhodes and Rhoads mixed up. I learned the Rhoads family owned the old walk-up Dairy Queen on Park Avenue at 10th Street. Bartley Rhoads wrote that his parents moved her in 1954 to operate the little ice cream and hamburger shop. Orange Hires Firm
The Orange City Council and the city's Economic Development Corporation are set to hire Griffith Moseley Johnson and Associates to help attract industrial and retail business. The move comes after the city and corporation decided earlier to not contribute the city's $25,000 share to the Orange County Economic Development Corporation. After Orange’s decision, other entities, including Orange County and the Port of Orange decided not to fund the county economic development corporation for 2016.
