Orange County and Deweyville will have good representation at the State Track Meet. It will be held May 12-14 at Myers Stadium in Austin on the University of Texas Campus. Bridge City’s Hunter Denton qualified for the State Meet in Austin with a gold medal performance in the long jump. Denton jumped 22-5.75. Miller Ends Game With Walk Off
Two games were played Saturday in Jasper between three teams looking for the last two playoff spots in 24-4A. In Game One the LCM Bears scored 8 runs in the 6th inning to come back and beat the Hardin-Jefferson Hawks 9-5, eliminating HJ from the postseason. The Bears would then play West Orange-Stark to decide third and fourth in the district behind Silsbee and Bridge City. The Bears led throughout the game until the bottom of the seventh. Wildwood Man Drowns in Orange
Around 2:30pm Saturday authorities were alerted that a man had fallen overboard in his boat in Adams Bayou near the Orange Boat Club. Approximately three hours later a dive team found the young man near where he fell out of the boat. Witnesses at the scene said two people in an aluminum boat were fishing between the Main St. and Western Ave. bridges when he fell overboard. Ready, Set, Teach
Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School students of Babs Foster’s Ready, Set, Teach class have been busy this year getting some hands-on experience in the field they plan to study after graduation. The students started campus/ teacher rotations in the classroom in October. They spend about 30 to 40 minutes, two days a week shadowing teachers in the classroom. Cardinal Theatre Works With Kids
Cardinal Theatre had the privilege to work with Mrs. LeBleu's 4th grade class this week. Yesterday, BCHS went into the classroom to teach an interactive playwright workshop called Kidwrites. The workshop is designed to emphasize the importance of an author, "You can't have a play without a playwright!" With BCHS guidance, the BCI children generated ideas of Setting, Characters, Conflict, Resolution and Dialogue. Together they verbally created a class play while some of the BCI students acted. Field of Plenty Postponed
The new community group sponsoring the Field of Plenty gardens is postponing the 'raise the bed' event on Saturday, April 30 because of mud at the site. However, organizer Sandra Hoke said if rain is not falling Saturday morning at 8, volunteers will be there working on the grounds. Field of Plenty is on about two acres on Wickard Drive behind Orange Christian Services on Park Avenue. The plan for Saturday was to establish 10 raised beds out of cinder blocks for planting. Former WOC Schools/Admin Sold
The West Orange-Cove school board has sold the old administration building, Oates Elementary and the former middle school on Western Avenue in West Orange. All three have been closed and unused. The non-profit group Brazoria County Alternative Academy bought Oates and the Western Avenue property and was the only bidder. Oates, at 900 Newton Street in West Orange, brought a price of $13,000.
