Tuesday’s damp weather forced a postponement of the Texas Department of Transportation bringing its 100-year old truck to the Texas Travel Information Center on Interstate 10 in Orange. TxDOT instead brought the World War I surplus truck dubbed Liberty to the information center on Thursday morning. Liberty was viewed by visitors at the Travel Information Center most of the day. The city of Vidor will be able to cancel the May council election after a candidate withdrew. The city secretary reports C. Audine Behn Rathburn, who had filed for the Ward 6 seat removed her name from the race. That leaves only uncontested races for the council. Accident Victim Identified
Orange police said the man who died in the motorcycle collision Wednesday evening Jeffrey Norton of Port Arthur. He would have turned 50 on Friday. Detective Captain Robert Enmon said the driver of the pickup truck that hit Norton's motorcycle was a 24-year-old man from Jasper who was going to work. Alcohol was in the pickup truck, but officers found no indication it had been consumed, the captain said. The pickup driver voluntarily gave a blood sample to police. Auto-Pedestrian Accident Injures One
The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating an auto-pedestrian crash in Vidor from Wednesday night. Sergeant Stephanie Davis with the DPS reports the crash occurred about 8:30 Wednesday night just north of FM 1132. Initial reports indicate that a 1997 Isuzu Rodeo was traveling southbound on FM 105 when as it came around a curve in the road the vehicle struck a pedestrian attempting to cross the road. The pedestrian Alesha Smith, age 27, of Vidor was transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Hospital with serious injuries. GLO Confirms Lease For Barges
The General Land Office (GLO) confirmed Wednesday that Savage Inland Marine has received a lease for fleeting its barges on the Neches River near the Bessie Heights Marsh. The lease will allow Savage Inland Marine to legally park barges in an oxbow south of the marsh. Spokesperson Brittany Eck with the General Land Office said the lease is for a five-year term at a total cost of $500,312.95. Eck indicated that the GLO has added a requirement that Savage also purchase and maintain a policy providing pollution liability insurance coverage at a minimum amount of $2 million. Man Dies In Accident On Hwy. 62
On Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 6:34 PM, Officers of the Orange Police Department were dispatched to the 8400 block of N. Hwy 62 in reference to a traffic accident with injuries involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck. The 49 year old male operating the motorcycle was treated at the scene by Acadian Ambulance paramedics and Orange Fire Department first responders. He was then transported by Air Rescue Helicopter to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital where he died of his injuries. Louis David (L. D.) Young, Jr., went to his heavenly home on February 22, 2017 at 93 years of age. L. D. was preceded in death by his parents Florence and Louis and sister Naomi Miller. L. D. was born on May 13, 1923, in Forest Hill, Louisiana where he spent most of his youth. Student Arrested For Assault
Orange police Wednesday morning arrested a student at Little Cypress Intermediate School for aggravated assault on a public servant in connection with injuring principal Michael Ridout. The school on Allie Payne Road is for fourth and fifth grade students. Lt. G.D. Keaton reported he went to the school at 7:45 a.m. He said Ridout's injuries were minor and he photographed them. The student was taken to the Orange Police Department for an interview and then turned over to the Orange County Juvenile Probation Department. BC Resident Asks To Be Deannexed
No action was taken Tuesday by the City Council on a request by a resident in Bridge City to have his property de-annexed from the city. Donny Huebner lives in the one hundred block of Texas Avenue and has a travel trailer that is in violation of Bridge City ordinances. Apparently Huebner’s wife lives in the travel trailer which is hooked into utilities on his property. She is physically unable to get into the more elevated home nearby and thus the need for the trailer.
