Restaurant and food businesses did better during April inspections than those in recent months. Orange County Health Inspector James Scales made 20 visits during the first part of April and handed out six perfect scores. The lowest score was an 86, with the Waffle House on Highway 62 and A-1 Smoke Shop on North Main Street in Vidor receiving the rating. The past few months, a few restaurants scored in the 70s. Collins Competent To Stand Trial
A man who has spent the past few months in a state mental hospital has been declared competent to stand trial for charges in connection with a collision that killed a husband and his wife who were riding a motorcycle. The Orange County District Attorney's Office received word Tuesday that 30-year-old Travis O'Brian Collins has been declared competent for a trial on two counts of intoxicated manslaughter. The Area Track Meet was held Wednesday at WOS HS. The top four will advance to the Regional Meet April 28-29 in Huntsville at Sam Houston State University. The day included Anthony Quinn who qualified for the Paralympic National Championships in Los Angeles this summer. Negotiations Actually Moving Forward
The two sides are close, but a new collective bargaining agreement between the Sheriff’s Office Employees Association and Orange County has not been reached. The second negotiation session was Wednesday afternoon and lasted for about two hours in the Administration Building of the Courthouse. Union attorney Greg Cagle indicated the two parties moved slightly closer with negotiations this week, but still have hurdles to clear. BC Installing Water Filters
Work to install filters in the water wells in Bridge City should start next week. Engineers and officials with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality will be in Bridge City on Monday. City Manager Jerry Jones said work will begin Monday putting the filters and chemicals in the wells to help relieve the brown water problem in Bridge City. Way Services Reports To Commissioners
The Commissioners Court received an update on repairs and improvements to the duct work at the Administration Building of the Courthouse Tuesday from Way Services. The news was not necessarily good from Way, but it was not all bad news either. Ken Kelsey with Way informed the Commissioners that work had ceased on the air system in the Administration Building because four out of five air units in the facility have ducts that have burst.
