Gnats, spider webs and mold were plaguing some of the food businesses in Orange County, but the restaurants and stores are meeting standards. County Health Inspector James Scales went to 26 businesses during the first part of June and the lowest score was an 81 to the Guadalajara.
Only four places earned perfect scores, though others came close with a 99. The perfect ones were the Orange Community Action/Meals on Wheels center in downtown Orange, Crawfish Company mobile unit in Vidor, Family Dollar at 3695 North Main Street in Vidor, and Days Inn, 2630 Interstate 10 West in Orange.
Scores and demerits are:
Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant, 137 MacArthur Drive: 81. Lots of gnats were found throughout the restaurant and inspector recommended a new treatment. Mold was inside the ice machine. Foods inside the walk-in cooler needed to be covered. Dishes that had been cleaned had old foods still on them. No food handler certificates were found. Restrooms did not have hot water. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers. Employee drinks were stored improperly. Vent-a-Hood area needed to be cleaned. Floors and walls throughout needed to be cleaned. Ceiling tiles were damaged. Wood was being used to repair walls at the food prep area. Bacck door needed to be sealed. Inspector suggested lots of repairs and maintenance are needed for the building.
Sunrise Donuts, 2830 Western Avenue in West Orange: 85. Sausage was not at proper temperatures. No record was kept on how long the sausage had been out of proper temperature. Reach-in cooler was not keeping proper temperatures. Dates were needed on products. Spider webs were found throughout store. Employee drinks were on the prep table. Vents at Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned. Walls, floors and outside of equipment needed to be cleaned. Light shields were needed. Ceiling tiles were damaged. Inspector said “lots of cleaning is required.”
M&S Grocery, 10876 FM 1130 in Little Cypress: 88. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Mold was on drink dispensers. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being stored. Dates were needed on sandwiches inside coolers. Drinks were stored on the floor inside walk-in cooler. Paper towels were needed inside employee restrooms.
Fuel Pint, 3118 Edgar Brown Drive in Orange: 88. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Employee restroom did not have hot water. Paper towels were needed in employee restroom. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Floors under milk inside walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned. Ice scoop was broken and on top of a step ladder.
Little Caesar’s Pizza, 866 North Main Street in Vidor: 90. Air filters were stored on top of reach-in freezer. Dates were needed on products inside coolers. Paper towels were needed inside emloyee restroom. Lots of flies were throughout. The oven, outside of equipment, floors and walls needed to be cleaned.
Dollar General, 4080 Highway 105 in Vidor: 90. Inspector pulled several expired fods from shelves. Lots of spider webs were throughout. The inside of the milk cooler needed to be cleaned. Lots of trash was in the parking lot and near the dumpster area. Old grocery carts were stored in the back of building and should be discarded. Back storage room needed to be cleaned and organized. Ceiling tiles were damaged. Paper towels were needed inside employee restroom. Current food service permit was not posted in front.
Vidor Superette, 2410 North Main Street in Vidor: 91. Mold was on a sandwich inside the walk-in cooler. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Dates were needed on products, including sandwiches, inside coolers. Lots of dead bugs were inside lights shields. Lots of rubbish was stored in back of store.
Market Basket Deli, 2005 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 93. Several drink productss were out of date. Employee was wearing improper jewelry. Area around fryers and storage shelves needed to be cleaned. Ceiling tiles were damaged. Water was inside the light shield and dripping on the floor. Carbon dioxide tanks needed to be secured.
Market Basket, 2005 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 95. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Floors inside milk cooler, produce cooler, and back storage room needed to be cleaned of old foods and trash. Current health inspection report was not posted in front.
Best Western Plus Orange, 165 East Courtland Street in Vidor: 93. Eggs were not at proper temperatures. Dishwashing room did not have sanitizer. Current food service permit, certified food manager certificates, and current health inspection report were not posted in front.
Kim’s Donut Place, 3012 Highway 12 in Vidor: 93. Sausage, boudain, and eggs were not at proper temperatures. No record of time was kept on holding the items out at room temperature. Fly trap was stored improperly over prep table.
Holiday Inn Express, 2655 Interstate 10 East in Orange: 94. Paper towels were needed at hand-washing station. Boxes of coffee were stored on the floor. Hand-wahsing signs wer eneeded at hand-washing station. Dates needed on products inside coolers and freezers.
El Ranchero Mexican Restaurant, 10383 Highway 12 in Mauriceville: 96. Ice scoop was on top of the ice inside container. Employee had improper jewelry. Employee drink did not have a lid and straw.
Express Mart, 1745 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 96. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Current food inspection permit along with the certified food manager certificate and current health inspection were not posted in front.
HEB Pantry, 2424 16th Street in Orange: 96. Gnats were on raw onions. Paper towels were needed inside employee restroom. Current food service permit and health inspection report were not posted in front.
Dollar General, 9692 FM 105 in Orangefield: 97. Inspector found lots of spider webs throughout. Shelves inside milk cooler needed to be cleaned. Floors, especially in back storage room, needed to be cleaned.
Domino’s Pizza, 970 North Main Street in Vidor: 97. Employee drinks were stored on storage shelf. Water was inside light shield in back storage room. Storage racks needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Ten West Diner, 2650 Lutcher Drive in Orange: 97. Dates were needed on products inside reach-in freezers. Floors at fryers needed to be cleaned.
Yum Yum Getcha Some, 2750 Highway 12 in Vidor: 98. Files found throughout. Old grease under flat top grill needed to be cleaned.
Speedy Stop Food Mart, 690 North Main Street in Vidor: 98. Soap and paper towels were needed at the hand-washing station.
Burger King, 2508 MacArthur Drive in Pinehurst: 99. Inside of reach-in coolers and freezers, along with sotrage shelves, needed to be cleaned.
