
Orange County Health Inspector James Scales found a number of problems at the Jack in the Box restaurant on 16th Street, giving the store the lowest score of his inspections during the last half of February.
Scales went to 16 restaurants or food-related businesses. The eight that had perfect scores were schools, daycare centers, or the county jail. The 100 scores went to the jail, Bridge City Elementary, Just for Kids Daycare in Bridge City, Kid’s Castle in Bridge City, Mauriceville school kitchen, Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School, Oak Forest Elementary, and Lollipop Stop Childrens Care in Vidor.
In addition, Scales made a pre-opening inspection with no score.
The scores and demerits are:
Jack in the Box, 2900 16th Street in Orange: 78. Shelled, uncooled eggs were out of proper temperature. Foods inside coolers and freezers needed to be covered. Mold was inside ice machines. Drink dispensers needed to be cleaned of old syrup buildup. Two faucets needed to be repaired. Dates needed on foods inside coolers and freezers. Ice scoops were broken and being used on ready-to-eat foods. Employee cell phone was on table near drive-through. Vents at Vent-a-Hood, outside of equipment, and storage shelves needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease. Floors and walls needed to be cleaned of old foods and grime. Food service permit was not posted in front. Employees did not have food handler certificates. Floor grout was missing.
Texas Country Store, 7111 Interstate 10 in Orange: 80. Milk and pre-packaged sandwiches were not at proper temperatures. Ice scoop was on storage shelves. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Temperature inside walk-in cooler was eight degrees warmer than required. Dates were needed on products inside walk-in cooler. Employee restroom needed paper towels. Drinks were stored on the floor inside cooler. Area around drinks station needed to be cleaned. Lights were out in the back storage room. Old fuel pumps and concrete had been stored for several months next to the building. Ceiling tiles were damaged. Restrooms were “very dirty” and needed immediate cleaning.
Sonic, 11786 Highway 62 South in Mauriceville: 84. Foods inside coolers and freezers needed to be covered. Cutting boards needed to be cleaned. Plumbing did not connect to the floor drain under the front drink dispenser area, so water was collecting on the floor. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers. Floor tiles were missing. Vent-a-Hood and outside of equipment and trash cans needed to be cleaned and sanitized. Floors and walls needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease. Storage shelves were rusted and needed to be repaired. Grease trap outside near dumpster area needed to be cleaned. Missing baseboard needed to be repaired. Inspector reported “lots of daily cleaning is required.”
KDan’s Super Foods Deli, 9604 FM 105 in Orangefield: 88. Shelled eggs were sitting on prep table and out of proper temperature. Soap and paper towels were needed at the handwashing station. Gnats were throughout the area. Employee had personal items stored on dry storage shelf with dry foods. Wiping cloths were store on prep tables. Foods were defrosting improperly on storage shelves. Fryers, storage equipment, floors, walls, and air vents needed to be cleaned. Deli is currently being remodeled.
KDan’s Super Foods, 9604 FM 105 in Orangefield: 93. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Foxes of food were stored on the floor inside walk-in freezer. Back storage room needed to be cleaned and organized.
Whataburger, 540 North Main Street in Vidor: 93. Foods inside coolers and storage shelves needed to be covered. Personal employee items stored improperly. Vents at Vent-a-Hood, outside of equipment, garbage cans, and floors needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease. Floor tiles were brokent. Baseboards and missing floor grout needed to be repaired throughout. Current food service permit and current health inspection report were not posted in front.
Domino’s Pizza, 2107 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 95. Chemicals were stored improperly on the back storage shelf. Employee drinks were stored improperly on prep table. Inside of the oven and floors near the handwashing station needed to be cleaned. Back door needed to be resealed.
