The WOS Mustangs have reached the semifinals for the first time since 2017 after a 35-20 Region III Final win over Waco LaVega Friday at Woodforest Bank Stadium in Shenandoah.
Down 13-12 at the half LaVega took the opening drive of the second half and scored to make it 20-12. The Mustangs had a quick three and out. LaVega got the ball back and started marching again.
Thoughts of the Pirates scoring again would put the Mustangs in a deep hole. They were deep in Mustang territory but an incomplete pass set up a fourth down and the Pirates decided to go for it and Ja’Quincy Walker made them pay for it. He picked off the pass and took it to the house. A two point try failed and it was 20-18.
LaVega got the ball back and then fumbled inside the their five. Khelvy Jefferson would get into the endzone and just like that the Mustangs had a 25-20 lead. “These kids just don’t quit. They don’t get rattled,” said Head Coach Hiawatha Hickman.
WOS would add a field goal to make it 28-20. The defense would hold and then WOS and Jefferson put together a long drive that ended with a diving him diving into the endzone to make it 35-20. They would keep LaVega off the board for the final 2:55 and punch their ticket to the semifinals.
In the win, Jefferson rushed 32 times for 245 yards and three touchdowns. He became the first WOS RB to rush for more than 2000 yds. in a season AND he is now the all-time leading rusher, and he’s just a junior. He also set a new season TD record.
They will play Sinton, who defeated Cuero 45-42, at Katy’s Rhodes Stadium on Friday at 7pm.
