District 25-2A…Tennis Powerhouse?
Who knew that District 25-2A was a tennis powerhouse? As it turns out, no one really did. Travis Mistry of Sabine Pass and James Menard of Deweyville both have advanced out of the regional tournament to represent District 25-2A in the UIL Class 2A State Tennis Tournament in May. Mistry and Menard came in as the #1 and #2 seeds in the region and that is exactly how they finished the tournament. Mistry got the best of Menard with a score of 6-2, 6-4 in the regional finals match. Since he was the regional runner-up, Menard was forced to win a “play-back” match against William Edwards, the number 4 seed from Bracketville, TX. Menard finished off Edwards in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 to ensure he would be one of only 8 players who advance to the state tournament. “Travis came out strong in the finals. I was able to battle back and felt more comfortable around the court in the second set, but couldn’t make the shots when I needed to. I am looking forward to representing Deweyville High School and the awesome people from our community at the state tournament next month” said Menard.
Deweyville Athletic Director, Brandon Prouse, was on hand to support Menard and had this to say about his effort, “His work ethic and determination are by far his greatest attributes. He is one of the fiercest competitors I’ve ever had the privilege of coaching. It would not surprise me to see both James & Travis battle again in the state championship match. It’s a great day to be a Deweyville Pirate!!” This year has been a history making year for the Pirates as they have won district championships in football, basketball, track, softball and are now sending their first player to the Texas UIL State Tennis Tournament in 40 years.
