Friday an Orange County Jury found Brenika Lott guilty of capital murder in the beating death of five year old Daviana Landry. Landry was found deceased in Lott’s home on 10th Street in Orange. Lott will spend the rest of her life in prison without parole.
Police were called to the house on June 26, 2020. Lott, 32, was Landry’s Godmother and the girl had been staying with her. When they found her, she had bruises all over her body, and her face and head were swollen.
“It was a team effort,” said prosecutor Krispen Walker who worked the five-day trial alongside prosecutor Mike Marion. “The Orange Police Department and the Jefferson County Crime Lab and everyone else involved did a wonderful job in this case. We had over 250 exhibits.”
For Walker, it’s her third capital murder trial involving a child in the past year. Surely it takes its toll on you? “It rips your heart out every time. But especially with children. It gets to you, it gets to those officers and others who have to testify when many of them have children of their own.” she said.
“But you know, at the same time, you know you’re fighting for someone that can’t fight for themselves. We can’t bring them back but we try to represent them to the best of our ability. And also to help bring closure to the family. And I think we helped do that for Daviana and her family today.”
The trial was held in Judge Steve Parkhurst’ 260th Courtroom. The attorney for Lott says they intend on filing an appeal.
