JD Dixson was born May 4, 1924, in Glenmora, Louisiana, and passed away September 8, 2026, at the age of 102.
JD Dixson began working at an early age. Before joining the military, he worked as a taxi cab driver in DeRidder, Louisiana. Because he was only 17 years old, he had to obtain a minor’s release in order to drive. He later moved to Arkansas, where he continued driving a taxi.
After returning to Merryville, Louisiana, JD was drafted into military service at the age of 18. He traveled by bus to Houston, Texas, for processing and medical clearance. While completing his paperwork, he was asked to join. Looking around, he noticed a uniform with red stripe down the blue pant leg and said, “I like that uniform, that’s what I want to be.” With that decision, he joined the Untied States Marine Corps.
JD married and raised five children. Over the years, he worked a variety of jobs, including driving cement trucks, delivering materials for motor freight companies, driving 18-wheelers, and operating dump trucks. Eventually, he became a papefitter at Bethlehem Steel Shipyard. After more then 40 years in the workforce, he retired at the age of 60. Family members often joke that he may be one of the few people who collected every Social Security benefit he paid into throughout his lifetime.
In 2024, the community gathered at Vidor City Hall to celebrate JD’s 100th birthday. Friends, family, and neighbors lined up to shake his hand, take pictures, enjoy cake, and spend time with a truly remarkable man whose life has touched so many.
Beyond his military and professional accomplishments, JD spent many years coaching Little League baseball. helping shape the lives of countless young people. He has experienced many proud moments throughout his life, but one of the most meaningful came at the age of 99 when he was baptized at Eastgate United Pentecostal Church.
JD was a shining example of faith, patriotism, perseverance, and love. He loved God, his country, his family, and his friends, and every now and then, he would enjoy a bowl of peach cobbler topped with ice cream.
He is survived by his children, Johnny Dixson and wife Linda, Lucy Jones and husband Jimmy, Ralph Dixson and wife Helena and Liz Tomlin and husband Jeff; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Sallie Dixson; son, Donald Dixson; and sibling, Cleve Dixson, Wesley Dixson, Lee Dixson, Ellen Meador, Aubrey Dixson, Barbara Quibeadux, and Shelby Dixson.
Family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 18, 2026 at Eastgate United Pentecostal Church, 18905 Interstate Highway 10 Vidor, Texas. Rev. Matthew Tuttle will be officiating. Interment to follow at Restlawn Memorial Park, Vidor, Texas.
