Pitcher Braylen Collins is pumped after getting a called strike to end the inning
Bridge City and Silsbee had to wait an extra day to open district play because of the umpire shortage. But it was worth the wait as the two teams put on a show for those watching in coats and blankets on Wednesday night.
Starting senior pitchers Braylen Collins and Silsbee’s Logan Simmons went toe to toe putting up one zero after another. Collins struck out 15 in 6.2 innings giving up no runs on four hits with two walks. Simmons lasted eight innings, striking out 11 and walking two. Both pitchers were pulled after reaching the 110 limit.
Still scoreless going into the bottom of the ninth and now facing Van Mitchel, Justin Abate singled and Dax Latiolas walked. Grant Hale came in to run for Abate. Aidyn Mulhollan drives one up the middle and Hale beats the throw home for the 1-0 victory. Landon Reeves got the victory pitching 2.1 shutout innings with 3K’s.
In the postgame interview, Coach Chad Landry called Collins’ performance the best of his high school career.
