Defense gets much of the credit for the West Orange-Stark Mustangs winning the recent state championship in football. Friday night the Mustangs’ defense receives the bulk of the accolades for West Orange-Stark’s 69-42 win over the Orangefield Bobcats in basketball at the Bobcats’ gym.
The Mustangs played tenacious in their opponent’s face defense while also intercepting numerous pass attempts in forcing 26 turnovers by the Bobcats. The result was frequent fast break opportunities and easy baskets for West Orange-Stark. Another obvious plus of the defensive effort was it limited Orangefield to just one basket in the first quarter a 3-pointer by Aven Lathrop with less than a minute to play in the opening period. The Mustangs enjoyed a 14-4 advantage after the first eight minutes.
Coach Tramaine Hancock was without the services of guard Kentavious Miller who was ill. Freshman guard Brettlin Wiley filled the gap nicely taking over the starter’s role. Wiley hit three buckets from outside the arch and finished with 15 points for the Mustangs.
Substituting freely West Orange-Stark seemed to have fresh legs on the court throughout the game. Ten different Mustangs got on the score sheet. Thomas Wallace led all scorers with 19 points, 13 in the first half alone.
Orangefield stayed within ten points through most of the first half, but appeared to tire as the game progressed. The Bobcats only dressed eight players for the contest. Payton Lathrop was their leading scorer with 11 points. Zach Dischler chipped in with 10, including 8 for 8 from the free throw line.
Next up for West Orange-Stark (1-1) in district play will be the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns on Tuesday night at the Mustangs’ gym. Orangefield (0-3) has Tuesday off and resumes district action also against the Longhorns next Friday night at Hamshire-Fannett. Orangefield did celebrate a victory as the Bobcat Junior Varsity won 32-26 prior to the varsity game.
Orangefield Lady Bobcats defeated WO-S Friday 51 – 26.

OJH vs. Mauriceville: January 7, 2016
The 7th Grade B team took on the Mauriceville Panthers to start the evening. Both teams got out of the gate slowly as they only managed to muster 1 free throw each in the 1st quarter. The second saw much of the same slow play and the two teams entered the half tied 3-3. After the break the Bobcats came out much stronger scoring 4 quick points, and jumping out to a 7-3 lead over the Panthers. The Cats strong defense and ability to find good looks in the final half of play lead to them to earn their first victory on the year. Orangefield was lead in scoring by Logan Gipson with 6 points and Josh Higginbotham with 4 points. The 13-3 win moves the Bobcats to 1-4-1 on the year.
The 8th Grade B team also got a win, shutting out the Panthers 14-0. The game started out very slow with and a lot of errant ball handling and the score going into the half was 4-0 in favor of the Bobcats. The second half of the game saw Orangefield come out and put Mauriceville away with a 9-0 run. High point scorer was Cade Kile with 7 points followed by Kade Grozier, Cooper Lowe, and Logan Duffey who each contributed a basket. The win puts the Bobcats at 5-1 on the season.
With their first game of the New Year, the 7th Grade A team faced the Mauriceville Panthers. The game opened as a close contest with the first half ending 12-10 in favor of the Bobcats. Orangefield’s offense stalled out in the third quarter as a result of some defensive adjustments made by Mauriceville, but they got back on track in the fourth. The Cats held their opponents scoreless in the final period and Guard, Aaron Miller hit a late “And 1” jumper from the wing that proved integral in the Bobcats earning a 17-14 victory. Miller was the high scorer of the night with 5 points and other offensive notables were Bryce Bergeron and Kaden Frazier, both with 3 points.
In the final game of the night, the 8th Grade A team was also pitted against the Panthers and true to form on the night both teams had some holiday rust to shake off. Through the first and second periods there were several lead changes as no one seemed to go up by more than one point. Kayson DuBois attacked the basket and earned some free throws and a nice catch-and-shoot 3 pointer from Heston Puckett helped Orangefield cling to an 11-10 lead heading into halftime. The Cats closed the game out by outscoring Mauriceville 14-5. Chase Broussard, Clayson Choate, and Kadeon Evans all played lock down defense at the top on the Bobcat’s zone, while Kent Michael, Colby Gonzales, and Tyler Greenwood helped Orangefield break the game open on offense. The 25-15 win pushes the Bobcats’ record to 3-6 on the season and all teams will travel to play the Hamshire-Fannett Shorthorns next Thursday.
