The Deweyville Pirates jumped out to a big lead and then needed a late stand and a touchdown before securing a 46-24 win over the Cushing Bearkats Thursday.
The game was added to the schedule after the Pirates cancelled their contest last Friday with Evadale following Imelda’s assault on Southeast Texas.
The Pirates ran down the field on their first drive and QB Nate Buxton scored from inside the ten but missed the PAT for a 6-0 lead.
Cushing fumbled on their first play and Gavin Buxton recovered. The Pirates quickly drove down and Ryan Bland scored on a hard-nosed run. A two point conversion by Ty Collier made it 14-0 with five minutes left in the first.
In the second quarter the Pirates went to the air with a 50 yard TD pass from Buxton to Dillon Fears. The PAT was missed.
The Pirates defense was playing just as well as the offense in the first half. After making another stop the offense came back out and put together another impressive drive with Buxton getting his second score. He added the PAT for a 27-0 lead with 7:30 to play in the first half.
Cushing would finally strike when RB Reid Allen broke loose for a 50 yd run. A two point conversion made 27-8.
The Pirates responded with Fears scoring his second TD after a nifty spin move put him in the end zone and the Pirates went into the locker room with a comfortable 33-8 lead.
But in the second half, Cushing made some changes and began to move the ball.
Allen scored on another 50 yd TD and added a two point conversion. A failed fourth down attempt by Deweyville turned into another TD by Allen and the fourth quarter started with Cushing only down 33-24.
Both teams battled back and forth in the final quarter. And with less than two minutes left, the DV defense made a big stop on fourth down. The Pirates then handed the ball to Ty Collier several times before he barreled into the end zone with 1:39 left to put the game away. Collier would add an exclamation point on the last play of the game when he took a shanked punt to pay dirt for a 22 point win and a 3-1 mark.
Deweyville will host the Kelly Bulldogs for homecoming next week.
