Two weeks into the season the Bridge Cardinals have matched their total number of wins from last year. Coach Dwayne DuBois is reluctant to call the wins upsets since rankings are really just for the fans, and he is definitely not upset with the effort and attitude of his Cardinals which the coach gives the credit for the successes so far this season. DuBois praises the play of the Bridge City defense which has been getting after it in the first two games.
Lumberton is the Cardinals’ opponent this week. The Raiders have a new head coach in Chris Babin who has returned to lead the program at his alma mater. Coach DuBois is familiar with the Raiders from his days coaching at Vidor. He points out Lumberton will be a little bit different from the first two Cardinal opponents in that the Raiders are bigger not just in classification, but also physically. The Raiders have an exceptional quarterback in Stephen Yarbro, who is tall, can see the field , and can throw the ball well. Tim Rhodes rushed for over a thousand yards last season and is back for the Raiders. Coach DuBois analyzes the Raiders may not be as quick as either Kirbyville or Newton, but they are a talented bunch with a very good coach in Babin, and it should be a good ball game.
The Raiders present a different look on defense than what Bridge City has faced in the first two games. Lumberton uses multiple formations on defense and likes to play a 5-3 stack and versions of that. DuBois says the Cardinals’ offense is not broke so there is nothing to fix, just maybe tweak. DuBois states Bridge City wants to run its power series, its sweep series, some play action, but the Cardinals do not exactly change what they do. Whatever the opponent gives them the Cardinals take while dictating the tempo and pace. The coach concludes Bridge City is not going to reinvent the wheel, instead they are going to keep doing what they do.
After Lumberton the Cards hit the road to Liberty.
