Alvin Lee Sanders, 86, passed away peacefully at Harbor Hospice, in Beaumont, Texas, on Sunday, May 7, 2017, after an extended illness. Funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Thursday, May 11, 2017, at Dorman Funeral Home; Chaplain Kevin Trinkle officiating. Rite of Committal and Interment will follow the funeral service at Mansfield Cemetery, in Vidor, Texas. Visitation for family and friends will be held prior to the funeral service from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM, on Thursday, May 11, 2017, at Dorman Funeral Home.
Alvin was born on Saturday, March 14, 1931, in San Augustine County, Texas, to Allie Louetha (Dudley) and Ora Eland Sanders. He became a Christian, or believer in Jesus Christ, at a Billy Grayham Crusade, in Houston, Texas, and was a Baptist. He proudly served in the United States Army. Tours of duty included the Korean Conflict and participating in the Atomic Tests at Camp Desert Rock, Nevada. Alvin was a devoted dog lover of both rescues and Boston Terriers. He was a long time Red Cross volunteer at Baptist Hospital- Orange, until he became legally blind. In 2015, he successfully completed the Gulf Coast Veterans Healthcare System Blind Rehabilitation Center, in Biloxi, Mississippi. Alvin was a Lamar graduate, certified peace officer, and volunteered with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. He also graduated as Valedictorian of his high school in Brookeland, Texas; Class of 1948. Alvin loved Model A’s and antique cars, and was an inactive member of the Gulf Coast Model A Club. He loved to oil paint and had numerous completed pictures.
Preceding Alvin in death are his parents, Allie and Ora Sanders, and his sisters, Lora Welch, Avaline Kasper, and Joy Smith.
Those who will cherish his memory most are his wife, Wanda Scales Sanders; sons, Robert Weldon Sanders and wife, Seyue, and Dan Sanders; daughter Hope Louviere and husband, James; grandsons, David Lee Sander and wife, Joy, Robert Sanders, Jr., James Sanders and wife, Leah, and Josh Sanders; granddaughters, Dani Sanders and Ruby Sanders; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces nephews, and extended family.
